Top Teams Sweep As Season Hits The One-Third Mark

South Glens Falls - Fire And Ice rolled over the Pepins 4-0 Thursday to maintain their slim one-point lead in the Forever Young league at Kingpin's Alley after five weeks of play. Floyd Butler finished strong with a 248 to accompany 187 and 192 for 627, pacing the assault for the winners (17-3).

Long-Short (16-4) kept in range with a sweep of the Over The Hill Gang. The Tomahawks had a rough second game which led to a split against North & South. Don Williams shot 213-190-221 for 624 in the Tommies' draw.

Chuck Boykin was the player of the day with 666 on games of 246, 256 and 164 as the Galway Guys beat the Marauders 3-1.

Wyman Swinton had 200-201-195 for 596 but Leftover got spanked by the Yanks 4-0 behind Mark Basso's fine 205-536. Paul Pribis started with 230-194 for 555 as Pribis out-classed Twisted Sisters 3-1 despite Ellen Marcantonio's 202-512.

Fire And Ice Still Lead; Boykin, Butler Shoot Mid-600s

South Glens Falls - Wyman Swinton began his Forever Young Thursday afternoon by leaving a 6-10. He converted that spare, then hammered 16 consecutive strikes before being stopped by a 7-pin. Another four-bagger produced 290-265. A final game of 201 brought his total to 756 - second-highest series in league history. His Leftover duo swept Pribis with the aid of Carol Finkle's finishing 202 sparkler.

A pair of lanes to the south, the guy who previously held that second-best set mark was putting together an excellent series of his own. Don Williams led the Tomahawks to a 3-1 win against the Galway Guys with 741 on games of 247, 237 and 257. Chuck Boykin prevented the sweep with 179-248-221 (648) for the losers.

Fire And Ice's stud anchor Floyd Butler threw another gem with 644 on games of 184, 215 and 245 as the league-leaders swept the Twisted Sisters under the FY rug.

Fire And Ice stay on top of the standings at 13-3 with Long-Short at 12-4 and the Tomahawks 11-5 after four sessions.

South Glens Falls - Don Williams fired the second-highest series in Forever Young history Thursday afternoon, fashioning a 742 on games of 248, 277 and 217. However, Floyd Butler, the bowler with that record (764 accomplished just last year) shot a steady 657 that began with a pair of 222s and ended with 213. As a result, Fire and Ice was able to offset Williams' feat except for the second game and come away with a 2-2 stalemate with the Tomahawks at Kingpin's Alley.

John Urban counted 214-190-180 for 584 as the Over The Hill Gang swept the previously league-leading Galway Guys. Chuck Boykin anchored the losing effort with 216-546. Mark Basso had a 231 in the middle of a 552 series, but his Yanks fell 3-1 against the Marauders - who welcomed back Audrey Baker from her winter hiatus.

Wyman Swinton rolled 542 on the bottom for Leftover in their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Long-Short. Roy Brady backed Williams' play with 192-531 and Mike White made his debut with 179-511 in a pacing role for the missing Pribis duo.

Fire and Ice sit atop the standings with a 9-3 record, followed by the Tomahawks and Long-Short at 8-4. The late-arriving pair of Phil Hack and Barb Arnold (North & South) sport eight wins and no losses and are technically fourth.

South Glens Falls - Wyman Swinton rolled a league-best 655 on games of 211, 232 and 212 Thursday afternoon as the Forever Young league completed its second week. However, his exploits were neutralized by Ellen Marcantonio's outstanding 219-194-160 for 573 - leading the Twisted Sisters to a sweep of Wyman's Leftover.

Don Williams had the circuit's other 600+ effort, a 602 on games of 208, 182 and 212. That powered the Tomahawks past the always-tough Yanks 3-1. Roy Brady assisted with 243 at the back-end of his 572 set.

Chuck Boykin and Floyd Butler came within a whisker of the 600 plateau. Chuck went 224-168-202 for 594 and Floyd had 207-180-203 for 590. The Galway Guys beat Vic & Jim 3-1 while Fire And Ice swept Pribis, creating a two-way tie at the top of the standings at 7-1 for each winning team.

Next week's marquee match looks like Fire and Ice (7-1) vs. Tomahawks (6-2).

Third-Game 277 Paces Tommie Comeback Triumph

South Glens Falls - Opening week of the seventh edition of the Forever Young league at Kingpin's Alley saw a re-match between last season's top two teams, the defending champion Wombats and the Tomahawks. After a solid 55-pin thrashing by Erica Sampson (220) in the first game and four consecutive open frames from Tommie star anchor Don Williams to begin the second, a 'down-under' sweep looked likely. Despite Erica's follow-up 199, the Toms were able to pull out an all-important victory as Roy Brady fashioned a 232 and Williams threw seven strikes in a row to finish with 214 and a 17-pin win. The writing was on the wall, and Brady put five in front and six behind a 3-6-10 spare for a whopping 277 finale and a 3-1 Tomahawk verdict. Roy ended with a league-best 681 on games of 172, 232 and 277 while Williams added 649 (234-214-201). Erica finished with an outstanding 570 series.

Floyd Butler shot 221-235-182 for 638 in Fire and Ice's 3-1 win against the Marauders, who were minus Audrey Baker. Chuck Boykin's 200-242-193 for 635 powered the Galway Guys to a sweep over Pribis, and the Vic & Jim duo did what they had to in bowling against the BYE team. Wyman Swinton came close to the coveted 600 mark with 175-206-215 for 596.

Mark Basso and John Urban tallied the league's other 500+ sets with 532 and 528, respectively.

Vic & Jim square off versus the Galway Guys in a big Week 2 pairing. The Yanks (2-2) draw the Tomahawks.

South Glens Falls - Don Williams won his fifth Forever Young high-average crown Thursday afternoon at Kingpin's Alley, fashioning a superb 703 series on games of 231, 225 and 247. It proved to be the lone accolade the veteran would take home on this day.

Gary Sampson fired 629 from the anchor spot, opening with 258 and 200 games and receiving ample assistance from wife Erica's (170-170-143) for 483 in the leadoff role. That was enough to power The Wombats to a 3-1 victory over the Tomahawks and the league championship for 2014.

The winners took the opener by 67 and followed that with a 40-pin triumph, putting the Toms' backs squarely against the wall. Having to win two points proved too steep a hill to climb.

John Urban posted 211-177-203 for 591 as the Over The Hill Gang beat Leftover 3-1 to finish in third place. Leftover got 569 from Rod LaChapelle and 564 from Ray Davignon and ended up tied for fourth with Twisted Sisters, who handled the Yanks 3½-½ behind Ellen Marcantonio's steady 171-179-170-520.

Floyd Butler shot 559 with an opening deuce but Fire And Ice were bounced 3½-½ by Kay + Dick as Mr. Kenneally fired 202-194-192 for 588. Everlyn Ferris managed an outstanding 171-159-185 for 515 in Ups And Downs' obliteration of The Singers. Roy Brady had the circuit's other 500 set.

Williams won best average with 206 and Kenneally ended at 203. Brady finished at 199, Butler 194 and Davignon 191.

Tomahawks On Verge Of Title As Brady Stars
Draw Or Better In Next Week's Finale Required

South Glens Falls - Roy Brady came off a disappointing 167 opener to throw consecutive 221 and 223 games, pacing the Forever Young league with 611 - and, most importantly, giving the Tomahawks a 3-1 win over Twisted Sisters in Week 14 action Thursday afternoon at Kingpin's Alley. Brady's partner, Don Williams, contributed a consistent (but sub-par) 190-193-196 for 579.

The win, combined with a surprising 4-0 upset sweep by Ups And Downs against the long-running first-place Wombats, vaulted the Tommies into the standings lead with one week remaining. Everlyn and Charles Ferris provided the firepower with six games above their averages.

Dick Kenneally had the other 600 or better series, a 603 on games of 189, 234 and 180 in Kay + Dick's 3-1 triumph over The Singers.

The Toms need at minimum a split of next week's points versus those pesky Wombats to assure the championship. There can be no tie without a half-point somewhere in the mix, so a roll-off is a remote possibility.

Williams and Kenneally are at 204 and Brady at 201 on the high-average list.

Wombats, Tommies Hold Serve With Two Weeks Left
Showdown Looms As Each Win 3-1 In Week 13

South Glens Falls - The league-leading Wombats beat the Yanks 3-1 Thursday afternoon to run their record to 35-17 after thirteen weeks of play in the Forever Young league at Kingpin's Alley. Gary Sampson showed the way for the winners with 635 on games of 232, 193 and 210. The loss eliminated the Yanks from title contention.

The Tomahawks stayed right on the Wombats' heels via their 3-1 win against Kay + Dick. Roy Brady led the league with 644 on games of 185, 247 and 212 while partner Don Williams managed a consistent 595 (192-201-202). Dick Kenneally had another strong outing with 231-214-198 for 643.

Ray Davignon (214-581) and Rod LaChapelle (220-580) led the Leftovers to a 3-1 victory over The Singers. Joe Sycuro put 206 in the middle of a 511 set.

Four teams still have a mathematical chance for top honors, but the smart money says in two weeks The Wombats and Tomahawks will square off one last time.

Next week's premier matchups are the Over The Hill Gang vs. Yanks and the Tomahawks vs. Twisted Sister.

Williams is atop the average leaderboard at 205, with Kenneally at 204 and Brady at 201.

Wombats, Tommies Get Some Separation
Brady Stars After Getting Some Rest

South Glens Falls - What a difference fifteen hours make. Roy Brady recovered from an absolutely horrendous showing Wednesday night in the Show Me The Money league, firing a ten-strike opening 260 game Thursday afternoon to lead the Tomahawks to a 4-0 sweep of The Singers and pull within two points of the pace-setting Wombats in the Forever Young league at Kingpin's Alley. Roy added 188 and 200 to finish at 648. He received minimal help from teammate Don Williams, who limped to 590 (173-191-226).

The Wombats were hammered in the first game by Fire And Ice (128 pins compliments of Floyd Butler's 247) but snapped back to take the middle game by 129 - thanks to Gary Sampson's 231. The folks from Down Under won the deciding game by 14 for the hard-earned 3-1 victory. Butler finished with 606.

Dick Kenneally shot 641 (192-246-203) as Kay + Dick beat the Yanks 3-1 to pull even at 24-24 on the year. Tony Plicofsky filled in again for vacationing Cathy Tracy and came oh-so-close with 226-182-191 for 599.

Three weeks are left in the season and only The Singers and Ups And Downs have been eliminated from contention.

Next week's premier matchups are Wombats vs. Yanks, Tomahawks vs. Kay + Dick and Twisted Sister vs. the Over The Hill Gang.

Williams is atop the average leaderboard at 205, with Kenneally at 203 and Brady at an even 200.

Four Weeks Left As Race Tightens

South Glens Falls - The Wombats were swept and the Tomahawks foundered in Week 11 action of the Forever Young league on Thursday afternoon at Kingpin's Alley.

Tony Pliscofsky filled in for Cathy Tracy and led Twisted Sisters with 566 (180-201-185) and a 4-0 Wombat beating. After a long string of successes, the league leaders had little to offer on this day.

The Tommies squandered a huge opportunity to make up ground, losing 3-1 to cellar-dwelling Ups And Downs. Roy Brady put 243 in the center of his 593 and teammate Don Williams fortunately picked the same game to tally his lone deuce of the session for their point.

The Over The Hill Gang won 3-1 against The Singers to hop into second place. John Urban finished with 215 to pull out the total-pin point for the winners.

Dick Kenneally made a decent return from the disabled list and paced the league with 606 on games of 213, 177 and 216. Ray Davignon somehow had 268 amidst his 602 for the only other 600 or better effort.

Scoring was tough. Games under average prevailed over those over by 38-20 and the session average was five pins less than the season norm.

The Wombats are at 29-15 with the Over The Hill Gang 27-17 and the Toms at 26-18. The Yanks are making a move, now 5½ back. Mark Basso (224-557) and Floyd Butler (566) cancelled each other out in the Yanks' 2½-1½ victory.

Next week's premier matchup looks to be Fire And Ice vs. The Wombats.
