Librarians, Tommies Duel For Position

South Glens Falls - The Librarians shrugged off a 66-pin opening-game walloping at the hands of The Singers and roared back to a 3-1 victory in Thursday's Forever Young action at Pine Lanes. The win puts The Librarians back into first place with an 11½-4½ record after four weeks of play.

The Tomahawks (11-5) continued their early-match struggles, digging themselves a second successive weekly 0-2 hole to climb out of - then rallied to a 2-2 draw against the Gamblers. Roy Brady rolled another exceptional set, a 637 beauty on games of 204, 223 and 210. His series would have been much better without the three 10-pins he missed. Teammate and anchor Don Williams shot a plain-vanilla 598 (206-190-202). Phil Camp was outstanding for the Gamblers with 221-565.

The Yanks lost 3-1 to the CC's, while the Racy Retirees got three points against the vacancy. Both are two points behind the league leaders. Bill Pike was all alone (literally) for Hi-Lo versus the totally absent P+C duo - and took three points for his efforts.

The Marauders pounded poor Frosty (Gary Frost's new team name) in the week's lone sweep.

Carol Finkle paced the ladies with 199-474. Chuck Boykin (224-568) and Joe Sycuro (222-521) rang up the league's other 500 or better sets.

Tommies Back On Top

South Glens Falls - You fall or get bucked off, better to hop back on and get the memory out of your system.

Tomahawk anchor Don Williams drew a wide-open tenth-frame split in the second game, relegating his team to an eight-pin defeat and an 0-2 hole with a game to go in Thursday's Forever Young action at Pine Lanes. Undaunted, thirty minutes later he blasted a final-ball strike to win the total pin point by a single stick and secure the Toms' 2-2 split against the Yanks.

Williams completed his afternoon's work with a less-than-spectacular 228-567, leaving the heavy lifting to leadoff man Roy Brady, who didn't disappoint in a 633 set on games of 193, 232 and 208. Roy continues to lead the circuit in average after three sessions at 204.

Mark Basso provided the punch for the Yanks with a pair of games in the 180s and 533 overall.

The draw moved the Tomahawks back up into sole possession of the league lead (at 9-3) by a half-game over those Yanks and The Librarians, who suffered their first losses of the young season - three in fact - versus Hi-Lo.

The newest addition to the league, the 11th team headed by Gary Frost and ably manned by sub Roger Feuerstein (181-502), was the lone squad to sweep all four points. Gary and his still-unnamed partner will have some bowling to make up soon, but for now they're unbeaten at 4-0.

Seven teams are at or above the .500 level after three weeks of play.

The tandem of Audrey/Roger will hereafter be known as the Marauders. Frost's team (#11) needs a name. Frostbite was suggested to a lukewarm reception.

Carol Finkle had the high single game for the gals (177) and Mary Tessino had the best series (451).

Librarians Bolt To Lead

South Glens Falls - The Librarians won three close games against the CC's and moved into first place after two weeks of play in the Forever Young league Thursday at Pine Lanes. Michele Gottlieb paced the victory with 148-401. That was the circuit's lone sweep.

The Tomahawks, Racy Retirees and Yanks all won 3-1 decisions. Roy Brady and Don Williams shot twin 579 sets for the Tommies in their triumph against P+C, who were missing the "C". Cathy Tracy had 168-430 for the Retirees as they handled the Gamblers, while anchor Mark Basso's 191-485 was enough to power the Yanks over The Singers.

Audrey/Roger and Hi-Lo split their match with two points apiece.

Brady's 224 opener was the best single game, while teammate Williams started with a pair of 203s. Curt Williams had the only other set above 500, a 179-522.

Carol Finkle rolled 171-440 to head the distaff side.

Brady Leads Tomahawks To Opening Sweep

South Glens Falls - Roy Brady rolled an impressive 632 on games of 224, 214 and 194 to power the defending champion Tomahawks to a 4-0 victory against Audrey/Roger in the first week of Forever Young action on Thursday at Pine Lanes.

Brady and partner Don Williams shot a league-best 1,205 scratch series in the win.

Four bowlers finished above the coveted 500 mark for the afternoon. Williams managed 216-573 while Chuck Boykin had 205-553 and Joe Sycuro 523.

Mary Tessino (165-455), Carol Finkle (156-437) and Michele Gottlieb (160-431) paced the ladies.

Williams Goes Solo, Tommies Wrap Up Title

South Glens Falls - Years of frustration came to an end Thursday when Don Williams threw three crucial strikes in the tenth frame of the first game, giving the Tomahawks a victory over Audrey/Roger and the championship of the Forever Young league at Pine Lanes.

Williams and Roy Brady had bowled hundreds of games as teammates in various leagues without claiming a title. Brady's absence for the finale due to a prior commitment made the task for Williams even more daunting.

"In light of what happened the night before, he really stepped up," Brady told reporters after learning the early afternoon result. The Toms captured the league by one point, overall.

Brady Gets Better And Better, Tommies Romp

South Glens Falls - The Tomahawks once again got a Page One performance from Roy Brady on Thursday afternoon in the Forever Young league at Pine Lanes. Brady fired his fifth successive 600 series, a blistering 684 on games of 191, 228 and 265.

It was truly a banner day for Brady, who not only claimed league-high season single and series with the tremendous showing, but overtook teammate Don Williams in the race for high average. Both are currently at 201, with Roy holding a slim total-pin edge.

Williams, incidentally, finished with 609 on games of 189, 207 and 213.

The Tomahawks took full advantage of the missing Odd Couple duo to post a 4-0 sweep in the match and increase their league lead to four games over The Singers. The Singers beat The PC's 3-1 on the adjacent pair of lanes to maintain second place in the standings.

Tommies Fade, Fade, Fade Away

South Glens Falls - The Tomahawks completed a 1-11 final three weeks getting swept by P + C Thursday afternoon, dropping all the way from first to fourth in the final standings of the Forever Young league. The winners ended up capturing the circuit crown by a comfortable three games over the Gruesome Twosome.

Needing only a draw after the Twosome and the Karaoke Kids eliminated themselves early, the Toms ran out of luck by leaving eleven splits between them. Don Williams and partner Roy Brady rolled nearly identical sets, each counting eleven strikes and fourteen spares, but the splits proved their downfall.

Following a 38-pin P + C opening win, the Toms dug their own grave deep with a second-game 52-pin thrashing. Leadoff Paula Hayes tallied 187 to actually beat Brady scratch. Anchor Chuck Boykin saved his best for last, a 185 that provided another victory, this one by seven pins.

While all this was happening, the Twosome and Kids were splitting their four points to both hop over our Toms. "We were never in it, never even competitive," remarked a sullen Brady following the match. "Normally, what we did would have been enough," Williams added. "However, with Paula and Chuck see-sawing 180 games, one of us had to break out, and neither of us could. Congrats to them, they deserved it."

Williams won the Triple Crown with a 207 average, a 277 single and 725 triple. Brady took the TC last year. The pair have bowled as teammates on five teams over the past two years, and have yet to win a championship. "We've bowled around 800 games over that span, with and against each other," Williams said. "We'd like to get a title before we hit that thousand mark, for sure."

Brady Secures Triple Crown

South Glens Falls - The Forever Young league wrapped up proceedings for the summer season at Pine Lanes on Thursday afternoon. The Tomahawks - Don Williams and Kenny Tooker - won the league championship, clinching the title two weeks ago.

Roy Brady Jr. crushed a brilliant 702 series on games of 258, 206 and 238 to finish with the circuit's Triple Crown. Roy had season-highs in single game (276), series (724) and average (211).
